Luxury and waste in the Maldives

On February 16, 1972, a charter plane with 25 Italians aboard landed at the small airport of Hulhule, Maldives. It was the first group of tourists to step on the archipelago. Today about 700,000 tourists arrive every year. The Maldives are submerged in waste, an entire island has become a dumping ground, with the number of fish diminished by a third. Collateral effects of a tourist boon.
